OBAMA CARES… ABOUT BUYING REAL ESTATE

Donald Trump isn’t the only real estate mogul on the move. The Obamas are starting to decorate three post-White House residences to occupy post-01/20/17. Here are some details about their new digs…

WASHINGTON, D.C.: The Obamas will stay in the ‘hood by moving into a nine-bedroom mansion in the Kalorama section of The Capitol city—a posh neighborhood of diplomats and D.C. old money—while younger daughter Sasha finishes high school at Sidwell Friends.

RANCHO MIRAGE, CA: Barak and Michelle have purchased a house in the desert community of Rancho Mirage not far from Sunnylands, the former Walter Annenberg estate, which a number of seated presidents have used as a getaway. Gerald Ford retired in Rancho and wife Betty launched her re-hab there. It’s a top destination for golfers (a favorite pastime of Obama’s). The local daily newspaper, the Desert Sun, has reported rumors of such a sale for more than a year, but sources this week say now it’s a done deal.

The 8,200-square-foot former residence of “The Onion Field” author Joseph Wambaugh, recently  closed at $3.5 million. Asking price was $4.2 million.

HONOLULU, HA: The Obamas are said to have bought a holiday getaway in Obama’s childhood home state of Hawaii near (or on) Kaanapali Beach, another golfer’s paradise.

Folks in the know believe that Los Angeles-based interior designer Michael S. Smith will be in charge of decorating the properties. Smith has a neighboring home in Rancho Mirage to the one purchased by a trust for the Obamas; has decorated the White House for them; and his life partner, James Costos, is the current ambassador to Spain and Andorra.

One doubts that gold-leaf is on the short-list for any of the homes.
